Building Your Business Network: Tips from the MBA Program Director

The knowledge gained from a Master of Business Administration from SNU prepares graduates to excel in the marketplace. If we are honest, it’s not always what you know but who you know. Oftentimes, who you know gets you in the door, but what you know keeps you there. The professional and personal network developed in our graduate business programs helps students throughout their degree and career. These relationships include mentorships, thought partners, and valued colleagues who support, encourage, and challenge each other.

The SNU MBA program includes several networking options, including our specialization-specific cohorts, scholar-practitioner faculty, and the SNU Business Leadership Network. Every MBA student is placed in a cohort, and over the 18 months of the program, students can deepen relationships with their classmates. Our classes are held one night a week, but it’s not uncommon to see our cohorts going to lunch, writing recommendation letters, supporting each other in grief, and becoming lifelong colleagues and friends. Our MBA students come from a variety of professional backgrounds, which promotes multifaceted and thought-provoking classroom discussions.

The past few years have shown that the marketplace is volatile, and business leaders need to have the capability to adapt and manage change quickly, which often times takes a network and strategic thinking. The network of peers allows our students to have thought partners and be able to pick up the phone and call classmates in technology, finances, operations, human resources, etc. The network that is developed for SNU’s MBA students is truly priceless.

Our MBA faculty is composed of scholar-practitioners, which means that the faculty not only have academic knowledge but real work industry experience. It’s not uncommon for our courses to be taught by a CEO, CFO, vice president, or attorney. Our faculty have worked in Fortune 500 companies and midsize and small businesses. SNU’s MBA faculty have an extensive network that students can leverage to connect with mentors, create opportunities for professional advancement, and open avenues for partnerships and entrepreneurship. At SNU, we focus on recruiting faculty who are committed to preparing our students for the next chapter. Therefore, many of our students stay in contact with their professors after the course has ended and throughout their professional careers.

One of the unique opportunities for our MBA students includes the monthly Business & Leadership Network. The event connects business leaders and professionals in the OKC area and allows attendees to engage in meaningful conversations, exchange ideas, and build valuable relationships that can lead to future collaborations. Participants are positioned in a dynamic networking environment, fostering connections to drive their businesses forward.

During each session, an industry leader is invited to speak. The dynamic speakers bring valuable insights related to their industry, and their presentations offer practical advice that attendees can directly apply to their businesses. Engaging with these top professionals and instructors allows networkers to learn from the best and gain unique and informed perspectives in their fields. Last but not least, the network allows business leaders to gain strategic business insights for navigating today’s competitive landscape. Attendees gain access to actionable strategies and market trends from industry experts.

In today’s highly competitive business landscape, business leaders who cultivate robust networks are well-positioned to navigate present and future challenges and opportunities.
