One of the most valuable parts of being an adult student is the relationships you’ll make with your peers. The students attending class alongside you are experiencing your struggles, there for your successes, and eventually will land careers in your job field.
At SNU, our programs utilize the cohort model, where students begin and end the program with the same students by their sides. We asked some of our students what they have done to build relationships within their cohorts. Here are some of their ideas.
Start a GroupMe chat.
Several of our students use the GroupMe app to create text groups everyone can talk with. You can also exchange numbers and start a group within your own texting app.
Respond to online posts.
Being an online student shouldn’t stop you from networking with your classmates. Be active in group threads and make an effort to truly respond to other students’ postings.
Listen.
One student said, “I sit back and listen…really getting to know my classmates. They are some really awesome people. I never would have known this if I did not take time to invest in them and listen to their stories and happenings in their lives.”
Share a meal.
Nothing connects people like a good meal! “Our cohort loves to eat and laugh,” another student said. “I feel like we learn more when we’re laughing. It keeps us awake and engaged.”
Study together.
Time is limited as an adult student, so why not multitask? Get together with a group of classmates to study and become friends along the way.
Whether you’re an extrovert or introvert, relationships are important. A survey of SNU alumni showed past students rate relationships as the most significant outcome of their degree. Your classmates can help you through tough times, celebrate with you, and maybe even be that connection you need to land your dream job.
