How to Choose Your Major

Written by SNU Professional and Graduate Studies | Feb 12, 2019 9:33:33 PM

Choosing a major isn’t like picking out a pair of shoes you can return if they don’t fit right. Depending on how far you are into your degree program, changing majors can mean extra coursework, extra expenses, and extra time before graduation.

So, how do you decide?

First, consider what you enjoy doing and where you want a degree to take you in your career. Hearing from other adult students who are either in school or have graduated is also a good idea.

If you’re still at a loss, but know you want to go back to college, consider a degree that provides plenty of options post-graduation. Certain programs, like Family Studies and Gerontology, Organizational Leadership, Business Administration, and General Studies provide the clout and benefits of a college degree while still leaving the door open for multiple career paths.

A current SNU student said: “I chose the Organizational Leadership degree program, because of the versatility of its use.  When I began this program, I really did not know what I wanted to do after graduation. Organizational Leadership carries many facets of business and management that I will be able to use regardless of which career field I got into.”

Something that sets SNU apart is the willingness of advisors to guide students through choosing a major. They make it a point to learn your interests and goals, so you can be in the degree program that suits your needs.
