Earning a bachelor's degree in education can unlock the potential for increased wages and a rewarding career. Southern Nazarene University (SNU)'s Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAE) program helps paraprofessionals and aspiring teachers develop skills in the classroom. These asipring teachers learn important skills like teaching strategies and classroom management.

Pursuing an education degree helps teachers receive the training necessary to impact the lives of their students. Program Co-Directors Dr. Anne Ghost Bear and Dr. Ron Titus recently answered some common questions about the BAE program. Their answers provide insight to those considering pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Education at SNU.

What do you believe is the most valuable element of your program?

"The BA in Education program actually helps adult learners find meaning and relevance in their learning. Each aspect of the program is applicable in a real-world setting," says Dr. Anne Ghost Bear. She adds that BAE graduates finish their degrees feeling well-equipped to succeed in the classroom and help their students be empowered.

Dr. Ghost Bear also emphasizes the unique benefits offered by SNU with Prior Learning Credits and Enhanced Advanced Standing (EAS). "All of this AND the fact our learners can potentially earn up to 39 college credit hours through experiential learning petitions makes for a remarkable learning experience," she explains.

Dr. Ron Titus says the program's most valuable element is its emphasis on comprehensive development. "We prioritize not only academic excellence but also the cultivation of character, critical thinking skills, and a heart for service," says Dr. Titus. "By nurturing the whole person, we empower our students to thrive in all aspects of their lives and become compassionate, resilient leaders who embody Christ's love in the world."

How does someone succeed in your program?

Dr. Ghost Bear says that confidence is key. "Believe in yourself and know you CAN do it! The BA in Education is an investment in yourself that helps you pour into young people and their families in the future." She is thrilled to help paraprofessional already in the classroom and the next generation of educators accomplish their goal of attaining a bachelor's degree.

"Success in our program requires a commitment to excellence, a growth mindset, and a heart for service," explains Dr. Titus. He says that students who embrace challenges as opportunities tend to thrive in this educator-focused program. He also notes the importance of actively engaging in collaborative learning experiences and demonstrating a passion for making a difference in the lives of others. "By embracing our values of integrity, compassion, and continuous improvement, they can unlock their full potential and truly make their mark in the world," he adds.

What advice would you give to someone interested in your program/industry?

"Get ready for FUN! Working with learners is different every day and is exciting," says Dr. Ghost Bear. "It's meaningful and fulfilling work and worth whatever you need to do to join in."  She emphasizes the importance of pursuing education as it is a true life-difference maker.

Dr. Titus encourages students to embrace every opportunity to learn and grow, both professionally and personally. "Education is a dynamic field that requires adaptability and a passion for continuous improvement," explains Dr. Titus. "Seek mentorship, engage in professional development, and remain open to new ideas and perspectives. Above all, never lose sight of the profound impact you can have on the lives of your students and colleagues."

What course is your favorite to teach and why?

Dr. Ghost Bear says she has four favorites. These include Intercultural and Collaborative Leadership in our Ed.D. program and Leading Diverse and Inclusive Organizations in our Organizational Leadership program. Dr. Ghost Bear was honored to develop the curriculum for these courses.

She also enjoys engaging with learners in Culturally Responsive Teaching: Valuing Diversity in the Classroom and Personal and Professional Development in our BA in Education program. She says, "All the courses are transformational for our learners...and me."

"My favorite course to teach is Motivating Students: Fostering a Love for Learning," says Dr. Titus. "It provides a platform to inspire future leaders to embrace innovative approaches, foster a culture of collaboration, and lead with integrity and compassion."

He finds great joy in equipping aspiring educators with the skills and mindset needed to effect positive change in their schools and communities.

Dr. Ghost Bear and Dr. Titus also provided some closing thoughts on SNU, the BAE program, and inspiration for future students.

Dr. Ghost Bear speaks highly of Prior Learning and how it benefits SNU students. "As I find learning through experiences to be most effective, I fell in love with SNU's robust Prior Learning Assessment system and with helping adult learners reach their chosen goals," she says. She also expresses the importance of different learning environments and what makes the BAE program unique. "Experiential Learning is absolutely a game changer, and our program really sets us apart."

Dr. Titus agrees that education holds transformative power, a belief he holds deeply and stems from his passion for education. " Education is not merely about imparting knowledge; it's about nurturing individuals to reach their fullest potential, academically, socially, and spiritually," he explains.

He sees his work as an opportunity to positively impact lives. An opportunity to guide students and educators alike toward growth, purpose, and fulfillment. He adds, "I believe that by instilling Christ-centered values and fostering a culture of excellence, we can shape future leaders who will make a profound difference in the world."

He is deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve in the field of education and to play a part in shaping the future of our world. "As we journey together, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence, guided by the wisdom found in scripture," encourages Dr. Titus. "Together, we can empower generations of students to embrace their unique gifts, pursue their passions, and fulfill God's purpose for their lives."
