Here are the top five time management tips from adult students at SNU.
“Do not procrastinate,” said one student. “Get your assignments done as soon as you can. Life happens every day.” Ready to kick the habit? Check out this article from the Washington Post for ideas.
One student suggested setting strong boundaries. “Regardless of the amount of homework I have, I take 30 minutes to unwind when I get home from work. Then I dive into my homework while my husband takes care of the chores and errands, so that I do not have to stress over it. We eat a late dinner and spend the rest of the evening with each other. No homework; no chores. I set my alarm and get up early on the weekends to finish up any homework I was not able to complete before the weekend.”
Setting boundaries may not be enough. One student said their best time management tactic is to “plan and take time for self care.” While it may not be easy to make time for yourself, it is absolutely vital. Whether it’s taking five minutes to drink a cup of coffee uninterrupted or going for a thirty-minute walk, you’ll be amazed at how that simple action can improve your mood and focus.
“Get up an hour earlier every morning. Pray first, and God will give you creative ways in which to do all the things that need to be done within the day.” Waking up early is a common tip, but the prayer is an added benefit. Setting your sights on God will help you remember who your effort is for and whose strength you need to rely on.
“Having a planner to record all assignments, a marker board to make a schedule, as well as writing down everything that needs to be accomplished” makes the difference for one student. This New York Times article makes the case for using a paper planner, for reasons like remembering items better and staying focused.
