Hailing from Cromwell, Oklahoma, Mark Baughman began his post-secondary education by enlisting in the United States Air Force. Mark proudly served for 21 years, building a distinguished military career. After retiring from the Air Force, he seamlessly transitioned into the private sector, leveraging his extensive technology and security experience.
In his transition from military service to the private sector, Mark began working at Booz Allen Hamilton, a leading consulting firm known for its technology and government services expertise. Mark's experience was highlighted in various roles, from IT project manager to communication program manager.
Recognizing the need to upskill in order to stay competitive and seeing the growing challenges in the global cyber arena, Mark decided to pursue a degree in cybersecurity with a focus on technical proficiency. Mark found the perfect fit at Southern Nazarene University. Mark shared, “I was adamant about getting a technical degree, and SNU provided the best options and degree plans. This degree allowed me to upskill my capabilities.”
Mark’s desire to make meaningful contributions to cybersecurity and his proactive approach allowed him to adapt to emerging technologies, and his pursuit of excellence didn't stop with his degree. He earned the CompTIA Security+ certification, opening doors to a new position within one of Booz Allen Hamilton's cybersecurity teams.
Mark emphasizes the importance of continuous learning, stating, "We should always be learning. No matter what it is, it is important to continue expanding our knowledge and capabilities."
Another key aspect of Mark's academic journey was the invaluable support provided by the SNU VETS Center. Recognizing Mark's need for a degree that would allow him to continue to grow in his chosen field, the VETS Center walked beside him every step of the way. Through encouragement and personalized guidance, they ensured Mark not only had a comprehensive understanding of his education benefits but also made optimal use of them. Like many other veterans, Mark's story clearly demonstrates the connection between continuing education and career advancement following military service.
The dedicated staff at the VETS Center spends numerous hours with veterans like Mark to ensure the success of SNU’s military and veteran students.
M. Nadig, VETS Center Director, shares insights into their approach, stating, "Our goal is to provide holistic support for our veterans, guiding them towards academic success and helping them make the most of their benefits." But the support Mark received didn’t stop with just using his benefits. He found veterans' support and support for his personal and spiritual growth at SNU.Mark shared, “Being a student at Southern Nazarene University offered me unique opportunities for personal growth and spiritual development, enriching my life in ways beyond just academic learning.”
Mark Baughman's journey demonstrates the profound impact of education, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to continuous learning.
